Chevron Corporation is an American oil company founded in 1911 in California, after the dissolution of the Standard Oil trust, under the name of Standard Oil of California. In a period of more than forty years, John D. Rockefeller led Standard Oil to be the largest company in the world for a long time.
It has major oil and natural gas fields, oil refineries and tankers. In 1983, it ranked eleventh among the world’s largest market-economy companies in terms of sales volume (27.342 billion dollars). In 1983, it made a profit of $1.59 billion and employed 40,000 workers.
At the beginning of 1984, it acquired the property of Gulf Oil Corporation for $13.4 billion and changed its name to Chevron, a firm that in 1987 was ranked 23rd among the world’s largest market economy industrial companies due to its sales volume ($26.015 billion). In 2009, it was ranked by Fortune magazine as the fifth company with the highest cash flow in the world.
