The Jeepster Commando was first produced by Kaiser Motors in 1966 to compete with the Toyota Land Cruiser and Ford Bronco. Three different models were available at that time: van, convertible, and family. The Kaiser line remained in production until about 1969, when American Motors acquired Kaiser in 1970. The Jeepster Commando C101 (101″ wheelbase) grew in popularity.

In 1972, AMC shortened the vehicle name to Commando C104, extended the wheelbase to 104″ and changed the horn design to accept AMC’s inline six-cylinder engine and the Ford Bronco-like V8 304 (5L).1 The Jeepster Commando C101 (101″ wheelbase) grew in popularity. The product line, formerly an AMC bestseller, quickly fell in popularity, was taken out of production in 1973 and replaced by the full size Jeep Cherokee.2 The Jeepster is an ancestor of the family of Jeeps produced by Chrysler.
