“What happens to us in the future? Do we become assholes or something?” – Marty McFly
Impressive diecast based on the legendary movie, Back to the Future.
In October 1976, the first prototype of the DMC-12, designed by William T. Collins, chief engineer and designer (formerly Pontiac’s chief engineer), was completed. Originally, the rear engine of the DMC-12 was to be a Citroën Wankel engine, but it was replaced by a French design called PRV (Peugeot-Renault-Volvo), a V6 injection engine that improved the low efficiency of the Wankel engine, which was an important aspect due to the shortage of fuel the world was suffering from in the wake of the 1973 oil crisis. William Collins and John DeLorean imagined a chassis produced with a new technology that had never been tested before called Elastic Reservoir Moulding (ERM), which could have contributed to reducing the weight of the car and thus supposedly also reduced production costs, but this technology from which DeLorean had purchased the patent rights was not suitable for mass production.
