Buick is a premium, high-end U.S. automobile brand founded in 1899 and owned by General Motors since its founding in 1903. Since its inception, Buick models are in the luxury category, above brands such as Chevrolet, Pontiac and Oldsmobile, but below Cadillac. Its main competitor has been Mercury, of the rival group Ford Motor Company.
Buicks were marketed almost exclusively1 in the United States and Canada, with few exceptions. Throughout the 2000s, the range has been simplified with the replacement of the medium sedans Buick Century and Buick Regal by the Buick LaCrosse, the replacement of the large sedan Buick LeSabre and Buick Park Avenue by the Buick Lucerne, and the premature death of the all-terrain vehicle Buick Rainier and the minivan Buick Terraza. The 2008 range features just three models: the LaCrosse, the Lucerne and the Buick Enclave (an all-terrain vehicle).
The brand has had a strong presence in China, highlighting in recent years the incorporation in this market of minivans, the GL6 and its big brother the GL8. In addition to the original models, several models of other General Motors brands are offered renamed as Buick, such as the Opel Corsa, the Chevrolet Optra and the Holden Commodore.
Buick’s logo, called Trishield (‘triple shield’), consists of three shields aligned diagonally: the left one painted red, the middle one white and the right one grey or blue. In Mexico the brand arrived in 1921 and was present until 1996 when it was officially withdrawn. However, after the departure of Pontiac, Buick returns to the Mexican market in 2010.
Currently, Buick is not sold in Europe, although factories such as Opel in Germany manufacture Buick models to be imported into the United States.
