DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) is a U.S. automaker founded by automotive industry executive John DeLorean in 1975. The only model it has manufactured is the DeLorean DMC-12 sports car, with stainless steel bodywork and seagull wing vertical opening doors.
The original DMC had a short, turbulent history, which ended in bankruptcy in 1982. Near the end, in a desperate attempt to obtain the funds necessary for the company’s survival, John DeLorean was filmed accepting money to take part in drug trafficking and was taken to court, although he was later acquitted of the charges brought against him after it was discovered that he had fallen into a trap.
The only model he made, the DeLorean DMC-12, was launched to fame after appearing in the well-known Back to the Future trilogy as the automobile transformed into a time machine by the eccentric scientist “Doc” Emmett Brown, even though the company had ceased to exist before the first film in the trilogy was released.
